Katherine Matilda Swinton was born 5 November 1960 in Scotland and started in the experimental films of Derek Jarman: Caravaggio in 1986, The Last of England, War Requiem, The Garden, then Edward II in 1991, which won her the Volpi Cup. Orlando in 1992 and The Deep End in 2001 brought wider notice, the latter earning a Golden Globe nomination. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2007 for Michael Clayton, playing a corporate attorney, and found mainstream reach as the White Witch in the Chronicles of Narnia films and the Ancient One in Marvel's Doctor Strange.
