About

Thomas Babington Macaulay was born on 25 October 1800 into a world he would spend his life explaining through Whig certainty: that history bends toward progress and Britain proved it. He served as Secretary at War between 1839 and 1841, then Paymaster General from 1846 to 1848, but politics was never the lasting work. The History of England became his monument, a multi-volume chronicle that married meticulous research to prose so sharp it read like fiction, advancing the idea that social and political advancement was inevitable and England its prime exhibit.
