British businessman and shipbuilder (1873–1912)
He designed the RMS Titanic and went down with it on the maiden voyage — the architect aboard his own doomed ship.
Thomas Andrews Jr. was born 7 February 1873 and rose to managing director and head of the drafting department at Harland and Wolff in Belfast. He led the design of the Olympic-class ocean liners, with Titanic as the crown effort. He sailed on her maiden voyage in April 1912, the builder watching his work at sea. When she struck ice and began to sink on 15 April, he stayed aboard. He perished with more than 1,500 others that night.
