Manfred Thierry Mugler launched his house in the 1970s and spent the next two decades pushing haute couture toward hyperfeminine drama and avant-garde line. He dressed Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bowie, and put Demi Moore in what became the most famous dress of the 1990s for Indecent Proposal. In 1992 he directed George Michael's "Too Funky" video and launched Angel, a perfume that became one of the century's best sellers. His fall 1995 collection - staged at the Cirque d'hiver with 300 looks, a crowd of 6,000, and a James Brown performance - earned the name "Woodstock of Fashion." He retired from the brand in 2002, returned as creative adviser in 2013, and came back once more to design for Beyoncé's 2009 world tour and Kim Kardashian's 2019 Met Gala look. He died in January 2022.
