Theuderic inherited Metz in 511 when his father Clovis I died and the Frankish kingdom splintered among four sons. Early on he dispatched his own son Theudebert to kill a Scandinavian raider who'd crossed into his lands. He backed the Thuringian king Hermanfrid against a rival brother for half the kingdom, then turned on Hermanfrid in 531 when the promised territory never came - conquering Thuringia with his brother Chlothar and Saxon allies, killing Hermanfrid at the Unstrut. The brothers then fought Burgundy together; Theuderic married the captured Burgundian king's daughter Suavegotha, and his brother Chlodomer died in the campaign at Vézeronce. Theuderic died in 534, and his throne passed to Theudebert without the succession fight anyone expected.
