The last king of the Vandals, who lost North Africa to Byzantium in 534 AD not through lack of nerve but through a single miscalculation: he sent his best troops to crush a rebellion in Sardinia just as Belisarius landed unopposed on the coast.
Gelimer seized the Vandal throne in June 530 by deposing his cousin Hilderic, whose conversion to Chalcedonian Christianity had enraged the Arian nobility. Three years later Justinian I used the deposition as pretext for war and dispatched Belisarius with an expeditionary force. Gelimer, either unaware or dismissive of the threat, committed most of his army to Sardinia under his brother Tzazo, leaving the African coast undefended.
