About
Theodosius collected taxes in Adramyttium until May 715, when the Byzantine navy and soldiers of the Opsician Theme revolted against Anastasius II and proclaimed him emperor against his will. He marched to Constantinople and took the capital in November; Anastasius held out for months before accepting exile to a monastery. The Anatolics and Armeniacs refused to recognize him, viewing him as a puppet, and their general Leo the Isaurian declared himself emperor in summer 716, allying with the Umayyad Caliphate.
