Byzantine emperor who tried to steady a fracturing empire through religious reconciliation, then lost his throne to a rival mid-campaign — and four years later lost his head trying to take it back.
Born Artemius, he ruled from 713 to 715, reversing his predecessor's Monothelete patriarch appointment and restoring Orthodoxy by naming Germanus I to Constantinople — a bid to win Pope Constantine's support. He worked to fortify the empire and build stability, but was deposed by Theodosius III in 715 during a campaign against the Umayyad Caliphate. In 719 he launched a rebellion against Leo III the Isaurian, backed by Tervel of Bulgaria's soldiers and funds.
