Tems turned a guest verse on Wizkid's "Essence" into a foothold in American pop, then became the first Nigerian artist with multiple Grammys - one for a sample of her own voice she didn't know was coming.

About this person

Temilade Openiyi released her debut EP For Broken Ears in 2020, the same year "Essence" with Wizkid crept into the American charts and eventually hit number 9 after Justin Bieber jumped on the remix. Future sampled her song "Higher" without warning in 2022 for "Wait for U" with Drake, which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and made her the first African artist to enter at the top. She co-wrote "Lift Me Up" for Rihanna and covered Bob Marley for the Wakanda Forever soundtrack, collecting Oscar and Golden Globe nominations along the way. Her 2024 debut album Born in the Wild cracked the UK top 30 and won her a second Grammy for "Love Me JeJe" - Best African Music Performance - at the 67th ceremony. In 2026 she hit number one in the UK with Dave on "Raindance", six years after the breakthrough that made the path.
