Ukrainian poet and artist (1814–1861)
A serf who became the founding voice of modern Ukrainian literature. His poetry collection Kobzar gave shape to the language itself, and his exile for joining a forbidden national movement turned him into a symbol — first for liberals across the Russian Empire, then for generations after.
Taras Shevchenko was born on 9 March 1814 into a family of serfs in Russian-ruled Ukraine. He showed early talent for art and rose to become a fellow of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. After returning to Ukraine, he joined the emerging national movement and the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius — a choice that earned him exile to Central Asia. Even under prohibitions, he kept writing poetry in Ukrainian and prose in Russian, and his work spread through liberal circles.
