Arab Muslim military commander (c.594-656)
One of the ten companions promised Paradise by Muhammad, but remembered just as sharply for the civil war that killed him — the first fracture inside Islam.
Talha ibn Ubayd Allah al-Taymi was born around 594 and became a companion of Muhammad, earning the title "the Generous" and a place among the ten whom the Prophet promised entry to Paradise. He fought at the Battle of Uhud, where his actions became part of early Islamic lore. Two decades after Muhammad's death, Talha took up arms in the Battle of the Camel, the opening clash of the First Fitna — the civil war that split the Muslim community. He was killed there around 656. Sunni tradition honors him; Shia Islam does not.
