Joseph Stalin's daughter (1926–2011)
Stalin's daughter walked out of the Soviet Union in 1967 and into American citizenship, carrying a name the world couldn't forget and a father whose shadow never lifted.
Svetlana Iosifovna Alliluyeva was born 28 February 1926, the youngest child and only daughter of Joseph Stalin and his second wife, Nadezhda Alliluyeva. She lived as Stalina until 1967, when her defection to the United States made her an international sensation — the dictator's daughter choosing the West. She became a naturalized American citizen in 1978, later taking the name Lana Peters. In 1984 she reversed course, briefly returning to the Soviet Union and reclaiming Soviet citizenship before leaving again in 1986. She died 22 November 2011, the last of Stalin's children still living.
