Born Nidhi Chauhan in Delhi on 14 August 1983, she was singing at local gatherings by age four. At thirteen she recorded for the film Shastra (1996) and won the reality show Meri Awaz Suno the same year. Her first real breakthrough came in 1999 with "Ruki Ruki Si Zindagi" from Mast, which earned her the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent. The second arrived in 2000 with "Mehboob Mere" from Fiza. By the mid-2000s she was stacking Filmfare nominations - "Dhoom Machale" (2004), "Kaisi Paheli" and "Deedar De" (2005) - before winning her first statue in 2006 for "Beedi Jalaile" from Omkara. Another win followed in 2010 for the item number "Sheila Ki Jawani", the same year she made her international debut on an alternate version of Enrique Iglesias's "Heartbeat". She has judged reality shows, appeared in music videos, and landed on the Forbes Celebrity 100 of India four years running from 2012 to 2015.
