French actress (1921-1985)
The first French actor to win an Oscar, and one of the few to sweep both sides of the Atlantic — BAFTA, Cannes, Emmy, César — in a career that made European cinema feel essential to Hollywood.
Born Simone Henriette Charlotte Kaminker on 25 March 1921, she rose through French cinema to become one of its most decorated performers. Her work earned an Academy Award, three BAFTAs, a César, a Primetime Emmy, and the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress, along with two Golden Globe nominations. The range of those honors — spanning American, British, and French institutions — mapped a rare trajectory: a European star who crossed over without compromise. She died 30 September 1985, her mantle undiminished.
