King of Norway from 1103 to 1130
The first king to personally join a crusade, leading Norwegian forces to the Holy Land in 1107 and returning with an epithet that outlasted his name.
Sigurd Magnusson became King of Norway in 1103 alongside his half-brothers Øystein and Olaf, a shared rule historians call a golden age for the medieval kingdom. In 1107 he sailed for Jerusalem — the Norwegian Crusade — becoming the first reigning monarch to take part in such a campaign. The three-year expedition earned him the name Jórsalafari, "Jerusalem-farer," and secured his place in Norse memory as the Crusader King. He ruled until Øystein's death in 1123 left him and Olaf as co-regents, continuing until his own death on 26 March 1130.
