Sidhu Moose Wala put Punjabi rap on global charts before he was shot dead at 28, a month after losing a state election and a day after his security was withdrawn. The Canada-based gangster who claimed the hit said it was retaliation in an inter-gang feud.

About this person
Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu was born in Moosa, Punjab, and started writing songs in 2016 - "License" for Ninja, then his own tracks with Brown Boyz. "So High" broke him into the mainstream. His 2018 debut album PBX 1 hit number 66 in Canada; singles like "47" charted in the UK. By 2021 his Moosetape was pulling a billion Spotify streams, the first Indian album to do it, with cuts landing on the Billboard Global 200 and charts in five countries. He joined the Indian National Congress that year and ran for Mansa in the 2022 Punjab election - he lost. On 29 May 2022, a month later, unidentified assailants shot him dead. Goldy Brar, tied to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, took credit; police called it gang rivalry. His lyrics - guns, violence, the raw edge of Punjab's underworld - had always drawn heat and legal trouble, and in the end the world he sang about came for him.
