Seti II, son of Merneptah and Isetnofret II, took the throne around 1203 BC into a dynasty already fracturing under short reigns and palace maneuvering. His throne name proclaimed him "Powerful are the manifestations of Re, the chosen one of Re," but the power proved contested. Between his second and fourth years as pharaoh, a figure named Amenmesse—likely a half brother—rose in rebellion and took control of Thebes and Nubia, carving Upper Egypt into a separate realm.
