About this person

Sergio Mattarella was born 23 July 1941 and rose through Christian Democracy in the 1980s, serving as minister for parliamentary relations and education before the party dissolved. He co-founded the Italian People's Party in 1994, became deputy prime minister in 1998 and defence minister in 1999, then helped launch the Democratic Party in 2007 before retiring to the Constitutional Court in 2011. Elected president on 31 January 2015 with centre-left backing, he steered Italy through economic malaise, the 2015 migrant crisis, and COVID-19 - the first Western nation to lock down. Re-elected in 2022, the second Italian president to win a second term, he's been accused of overreach for blocking a finance minister pick and twice appointing prime ministers himself rather than calling elections, moves that sparked constitutional crisis and impeachment threats. He's also been praised for steadiness and impartiality, maintaining high approval even as he oversees Giorgia Meloni, Italy's first female prime minister and the most right-wing leader since 1945.
