About

Sergio Mattarella was born 23 July 1941 and rose through Christian Democracy in the 1980s, serving as minister for parliamentary relations and education before the party dissolved. He co-founded the Italian People's Party in 1994, became deputy prime minister in 1998 and defence minister in 1999, then helped launch the Democratic Party in 2007 before retiring to the Constitutional Court in 2011.
