About

Born in Ibadan in 1959 and raised in England from age four, Helen Folasade Adu studied fashion at Saint Martin's and modeled before joining the band Pride in the early eighties. After forming her own group in 1983, she released Diamond Life the following year — it became the best-selling debut by a British female vocalist and set the template: smooth, unshowy, airtight. Live Aid and the film Absolute Beginners followed in the mid-eighties; Promise, Stronger Than Pride, and Love Deluxe arrived in careful intervals through 1992.
