About this person
Ryuji Higa, born September 1995, built a following as Ryuchell by modeling in Harajuku during the mid-2010s and became a defining voice in Japan's genderless fashion subculture. In 2018 they released their first single, "Hands Up!! If You're Awesome," expanding into music. Four years later they took a public stand, advocating for LGBT rights on Japanese television and announcing they no longer identified under male gender roles - a declaration made alongside news of their divorce. The openness invited backlash. Ryuchell died in July 2023 at 27.
