The drummer who made Queen sound like Queen — that's the short version. Taylor's kit work was immediate and strange enough that listeners voted him eighth-greatest in classic rock history, and his high countertenor gave the band its second voice. He also wrote the hits: "Radio Ga Ga", "A Kind of Magic", three UK number ones.
Roger Meddows Taylor was born 26 July 1949 and joined Queen as drummer and backing vocalist, a combination that became his signature — the countertenor range let him split leads and harmonies on his own compositions. He wrote or co-wrote at least one track per album, including "These Are the Days of Our Lives", "Innuendo" and "Under Pressure", all of which hit number one in the UK. During the 1980s he ran a parallel band called the Cross, sang lead and played rhythm guitar, and turned up as a panellist on the quiz show Pop Quiz.
