The striker who captained Arsenal to nothing, then jumped to Manchester United and won the title in his first season - a betrayal that stung sharper because he delivered exactly what he promised.

About this person

Van Persie came through Feyenoord's academy and lifted the 2002 UEFA Cup as a teenager before a falling-out sent him to Arsenal in 2004. He spent eight years there, shifting from winger to lone striker after Bergkamp and Henry left, and by 2011-12 he was captain and double Player of the Year with a Golden Boot. Then he walked. United paid up in July 2012 and he fired them to the Premier League title immediately, winning a second straight Golden Boot. Injuries gutted the next two seasons and he left for Fenerbahçe in 2015, where his body betrayed him again until a buyout freed him to rejoin Feyenoord and win one last Dutch Cup in 2018. He scored 50 times for the Netherlands across three World Cups, captained them from 2013 to 2015, and retired the all-time top scorer until 2025. Coaching followed - Heerenveen, then Feyenoord's top job in February 2025, sacked four months later.
