Jean-Baptiste Nicolas Robert Schuman was born in Luxembourg on 29 June 1886 and became a French statesman and Christian democratic thinker. He served twice as Prime Minister of France, and held posts as Minister of Finance and Foreign Minister in the postwar years. In those roles he helped build the architecture that would bind Europe and the Atlantic: he was instrumental in founding the European Communities, the Council of Europe, and NATO.
