About this person

Robert Pike was born in 1956 in Canada and landed at Bell Labs, where he joined the Unix team and wrote the first window system for Unix in 1981 - work that earned him a patent for overlapping windows on a display. With Ken Thompson he co-created UTF-8, the character encoding that became the standard for representing text across the web. He co-authored The Unix Programming Environment and The Practice of Programming with Brian Kernighan, then moved on to Bell Labs' Plan 9 operating system. Later, at Google, he became one of the architects behind Go, a language built for concurrency and scale. In 2026 USENIX gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award, citing the breadth of his contributions across operating systems, languages, interfaces, tools, and the representation of text itself - work that shaped both research and practice worldwide.
