About this person

Gervais tried pop stardom first: his 1980s new-wave act Seona Dancing flopped in the UK but somehow charted in the Philippines with "More to Lose" before London Records dropped them. He managed Suede, then pivoted to comedy in the late 1990s, sharpening his edge on Channel 4's The 11 O'Clock Show as a provocateur. In 2001 he co-created The Office with Stephen Merchant, a BBC mockumentary that turned workplace humiliation into appointment television. Extras followed in 2005, then Derek, After Life, and a string of stand-up tours. He hosted the Golden Globes five times between 2010 and 2020, appeared in the Night at the Museum trilogy, and co-created The Ricky Gervais Show podcast with Merchant and Karl Pilkington, which spun off An Idiot Abroad. By 2010 Time had named him one of the world's most influential people - a designation earned less by charm than by volume.
