Poincaré steered France through the First World War from the presidency, then returned as prime minister to send troops into the Ruhr when Germany stalled on reparations — earning him the nickname Poincaré-la-Guerre in Britain and America, where they saw him as the man who'd helped light the fuse in 1914 and now wanted Germany crushed.

Biography

About

Trained as a lawyer, Poincaré entered the Chamber of Deputies in 1887 and climbed through cabinet posts until co-founding the Democratic Republican Alliance in 1902, the dominant centre-right party of the Third Republic. He became prime minister in 1912 and president the following year, a role he used more actively than custom allowed: he traveled to Russia twice to shore up the alliance frayed by the Bosnian and Agadir crises, and played a significant part in the July Crisis that pulled France into war.
