Born Gadadhar Chattopadhyay in Kamarpukur, Bengal Presidency, he reported religious experiences from childhood. Around twenty he took a post as priest at the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple, where his devotion to the goddess Kali sparked a series of spiritual visions that other teachers vouched for as genuine. Married to Sarada Devi in 1859 in a union never consummated, he studied under multiple gurus across Vaishnavism, Tantric Shaktism, Advaita Vedanta, Christianity, and Islam, receiving sannyasa initiation in 1865 from the monk Tota Puri.
