About

Born at the Prince's Palace in May 1923, the only son of Hereditary Princess Charlotte and Prince Pierre, Rainier inherited Monaco in 1949 and set about remaking it. He steered the principality away from its casino-gambling foundations and toward its present identity as a tax haven and cultural hub. Along the way he pushed through constitutional reforms that curbed the sovereign's absolute power. In 1956 he married American film star Grace Kelly, a union that brought global attention and three children: Caroline, Albert, and Stéphanie.
