The last pharaoh of Egypt's First Dynasty, closing out three centuries of rule around 2900 BC. His 33-year reign marked the end of an era—after him, the throne passed to new hands and a Second Dynasty began.
Qa'a's name translates to "his arm is raised," a gesture of power or greeting now lost to time. He took the throne at the end of the 30th century BC and held it for roughly 33 years, longer than most rulers of his age. His reign closed the First Dynasty, the line of kings who had unified Egypt and built the first great state on the Nile. What came after him was rupture: when he died, the dynasty died with him, and a new royal house rose to replace the old.
