Park Jae-sang spent a decade releasing albums in South Korea before "Gangnam Style" detonated in the summer of 2012. The single cracked the top 10 of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, its video became the first on YouTube to reach 1 billion views, and Psy briefly stood at the center of a new kind of global fame - meme-driven, platform-native, unmoored from language. He followed it with "Gentleman" in 2013, which set a record for first-day YouTube views and again hit the Hot 100's top 10. The viral heat cooled, but the accolades stuck: an American Music Award, a World Music Award, 10 MAMA Awards, and South Korea's Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit. He founded the talent agency P Nation and continued releasing music, no longer chasing lightning but no longer needing to.
