About

Born 9 October 1935, Edward inherited his dukedom at six when his father died in a plane crash during the Second World War. A grandson of George V and first cousin to Elizabeth II, he spent decades carrying out royal duties on her behalf — over 140 charities, trade missions until 2001, and ceremonial posts from the University of Surrey to the Royal Institution. Since 1967 he's been Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, and for years he handed out the silverware at Wimbledon as president of the All England Club.
