Bishop Porphyrius was a Russian traveller, theologian, orientalist, archaeologist and byzantinologist, founder of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem, and discoverer of several ancient codices. From 1865 on, he was auxiliary bishop of Chigirin.
