The pope who launched the Crusades. In 1095, Urban II stood before a council in Clermont and ignited a centuries-long collision between Christian Europe and the Islamic world — promising absolution to anyone who would march east to take Jerusalem.
Born Odo of Châtillon around 1035 into French nobility, he rose through the church as grand prior of Cluny and bishop of Ostia before becoming pope in March 1088. His papacy meant navigating rival antipopes, squabbling Christian kingdoms, and Turkish advances into Anatolia. Then in 1095 he began preaching what became the First Crusade, offering forgiveness of sins to those who would reclaim the Holy Land and fight Muslims in Spain.
