Born Odo of Châtillon around 1035 into French nobility, he rose through the church as grand prior of Cluny and bishop of Ostia before becoming pope in March 1088. His papacy meant navigating rival antipopes, squabbling Christian kingdoms, and Turkish advances into Anatolia. Then in 1095 he began preaching what became the First Crusade, offering forgiveness of sins to those who would reclaim the Holy Land and fight Muslims in Spain.
