Pope
He held Rome's highest religious office during the bitter standoff between the Latin and Greek churches, keeping the hard line his predecessor had drawn against Constantinople's patriarch.
Stephen V became bishop of Rome in September 885, inheriting a church divided along linguistic and theological fault lines. His papacy continued the confrontational stance Nicholas I had taken toward Photius I of Constantinople, refusing to soften Rome's position in the widening rift between East and West. He applied the same unyielding approach to the emerging Slavic Orthodox communities, asserting papal authority where the Eastern church was gaining ground. He ruled the Papal States for six years, dying on 14 September 891.
