The bishop of Rome who held the seat when the last apostle likely died — the hinge moment when living memory of Christ passed into institution.
About
Evaristus, also called Aristus, led the Roman church from around 99 or 100 until his death in 107 or 108. His tenure probably overlapped with the death of John the Apostle, closing the Apostolic Age — the generation that had known Jesus firsthand. After that, the church was entirely in the hands of those who inherited the story. He is venerated as a saint across Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox traditions.
