Pope
The first pope consecrated without waiting for the emperor's blessing — a quiet line in the sand that reshaped the balance between Rome and Byzantium.
John V became bishop of Rome on 23 July 685 and died barely a year later, on 2 August 686. He was the first in a decade-long run of ten consecutive popes of Eastern origin, and the first to be consecrated without prior imperial consent — a small procedural break that carried weight. His short papacy focused on mending the frayed relationship between the city and the Empire. He didn't live long enough to see much beyond that reconciliation, gone within thirteen months of taking the chair.
