A Roman soldier executed in 303 for refusing to renounce Christianity, he became the knight who slays the dragon in legend and the patron saint claimed by England, Georgia, Portugal, and a dozen other nations.
George was a Cappadocian Greek who rose to the Praetorian Guard under Emperor Diocletian. When the Diocletianic Persecution began, he refused to recant his faith and was sentenced to death on 23 April 303. His martyrdom made him one of Christianity's most venerated figures, but it was the Crusades that elevated him to military saint. The legend of George and the Dragon immortalized him in hagiography, and his reach spread across continents.
