Pope
A papal reign measured in weeks: elected in July 1276, dead by August, never ordained a priest. Dante later placed him in Purgatory, purging avarice.
Born Ottobuono de' Fieschi sometime between 1210 and 1220, he rose through Church diplomacy. In May 1265, Pope Clement IV sent him to England, where he brokered peace between King Henry III and his rebellious barons. The mission succeeded. Eleven years later, following the death of Innocent V, he was elected head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States on 11 July 1276. He died of natural illness on 18 August, thirty-eight days in, before ordination to the priesthood could occur. Dante cast him on Purgatory's fifth terrace, facedown, cleansing the sin of avarice.
