He murdered an emperor, married the widow at knifepoint, and broke her daughter's engagement to a Vandal prince — which brought a fleet to Rome. His reign lasted ten weeks and ended with him torn apart by his own citizens in the street.
Petronius Maximus was a wealthy senator who helped orchestrate the murders of both the Western Roman magister militum Aëtius and Emperor Valentinian III. After Valentinian's death, he bribed palace officials and secured Senate backing to seize the throne in 455. To consolidate power, he forced Valentinian's widow Licinia Eudoxia into marriage and compelled her daughter Eudocia to marry his own son, cancelling her betrothal to the son of Vandal king Genseric.
