King of Portugal from 1853 to 1861
He was called "the Hopeful" and ruled Portugal for eight years before dying at twenty-four. The nickname stuck because the promise never got to ripen.
Born Pedro de Alcântara Maria Fernando Miguel Rafael Gonzaga Xavier João António Leopoldo Vítor Francisco de Assis Júlio Amélio on 16 September 1837, he came to the throne in 1853 at fifteen. For the next eight years he wore the crown as Dom Pedro V, King of Portugal. On 11 November 1861, he died. He was twenty-four.
