French statesman (1857–1932)
He built an empire in Southeast Asia and made it to the French presidency — then was shot dead eleven months into the job.
Joseph Athanase Doumer, who went by Paul, was born 22 March 1857. He became one of the most active and effective governors general of Indochina, earning the title "the Father of French Indochina" for the administrative and infrastructural machinery he laid down across the colony. That work carried him home into French politics and eventually to the presidency in June 1931. On 7 May 1932, less than a year into his term, he was assassinated.
