About this person
Born 13 August 1894, Blobel became a Sicherheitsdienst commander and in September 1941 directed the killings at Babi Yar ravine. He pioneered the use of the gas van and later developed gas chambers for the extermination camps. From late 1942 he led Sonderaktion 1005, the systematic exhumation and destruction of evidence at mass killing sites tied to Operation Reinhard. He was tried at the Einsatzgruppen trial after the war, sentenced to death, and executed on 7 June 1951.
