Ancient Macedonian general
Philip II's right hand and Alexander the Great's most senior commander — until his son's treason trial ended with both their executions.
Parmenion, son of Philotas, was born around 400 BC into Macedonian nobility. He rose through the ranks to become Philip II's chief military lieutenant, the king's most trusted general. When Alexander inherited the throne, Parmenion stayed on as strategos, the highest military role beneath the king himself. His siblings Asander and Agathon also climbed into Alexander's inner circle. In 330 BC his son Philotas was convicted of treason. Parmenion was assassinated in the aftermath — whether as complicit conspirator or dangerous liability, the record doesn't clarify.
