Sultan of the Ottoman Empire at fourteen, dead in a coup at seventeen. Osman II tried to curb the Janissaries' power and paid for it with his life — strangled in a castle dungeon, the first Ottoman sultan killed by his own men.

Biography

About

Osman became sultan on 26 February 1618, three months past his thirteenth birthday. The throne came early and he held it young. By 1622 he had set himself against the Janissary corps, the empire's elite soldiers who'd grown into a political force he couldn't control. They turned on him. On 20 May 1622, not yet eighteen, he was killed — regicide, the term is exact. The first sultan murdered by the apparatus meant to protect him.
