Western Roman Emperor
A Roman emperor for four months who wasn't even recognized by the other half of the empire. Olybrius wore the purple in 472 while real power sat with Ricimer, the Germanic strongman who'd made him, and spent his brief reign more interested in religion than rule.
Anicius Olybrius became augustus of the western Roman Empire in July 472, installed by Ricimer, the magister militum of Germanic descent who held the actual levers of power. Leo I, the augustus ruling in the east, never recognized Olybrius as legitimate. While Ricimer and his nephew Gundobad ran the machinery of state, Olybrius occupied himself with religious matters. He died on 2 November 472, four months into a reign that existed more on paper than in fact.
