Oliver Cromwell was an English farmer and MP whose life before 1640 was marked by failure — he nearly emigrated to New England. When civil war broke out in 1642, he discovered a talent for command. By 1645 he led the cavalry that broke the Royalists, and in January 1649 he was among those who sent Charles I to the scaffold. Military victories in Ireland and Scotland secured the Commonwealth, and in December 1653 Cromwell became Lord Protector, a role he held until his death in 1658.
