Cambodia's current king came to the throne not through birthright ambition but through an unexpected abdication - a former ballet teacher and UN diplomat who spent decades in Europe before returning to wear a crown shaped by constitutional limits and his father's long shadow.

About this person

Born 14 May 1953, Norodom Sihamoni is the eldest son of King Norodom Sihanouk and Queen Norodom Monineath. Educated in Czechoslovakia, he built a life far from Phnom Penh: he taught classical ballet, worked as a cultural ambassador across Europe, and represented Cambodia at the United Nations and UNESCO. When his father abdicated in October 2004, Sihamoni ascended on 14 October - not as a political operator but as a ceremonial figure in a constitutional monarchy. Since then he has leaned into what he knew before kingship: cultural advocacy and quiet philanthropy, holding a role that requires him to stand above Cambodia's political turbulence without the power to steer it.
