Born at Tsarskoye Selo in 1868, Nicholas Alexandrovich Romanov became Emperor of Russia in 1894, eldest son of Alexander III, widely considered unprepared for the scale of what he inherited. He resisted political reform and clung to autocratic rule even after the 1905 Revolution forced the creation of the Duma. Defeat in the Russo-Japanese War and mounting domestic unrest eroded confidence; World War I finished it.
