She watched her son become the last Emperor of Russia, then watched the empire collapse beneath him. Born a Danish princess, she ruled as empress for thirteen years before Nicholas II inherited a throne that would not survive his reign.
Princess Dagmar of Denmark, fourth child of Christian IX and Louise of Hesse-Kassel, was born on 26 November 1847 into a minor royal house that would seed thrones across Europe. Her marriage made her Maria Feodorovna, and when her husband became Alexander III in 1881, she became Empress of Russia. For thirteen years she held that position, until Alexander's death in 1894 passed the crown to their eldest son. Nicholas II took the throne on 1 November 1894 and held it until his abdication on 15 March 1917, the final emperor of a dynasty that had ruled for three centuries. She outlived the empire…
