Born at Peterhof Palace in 1897, Tatiana Nikolaevna was considered the most beautiful and aristocratic-looking of the five imperial children. Her siblings called her "the governess" for her domineering yet maternal temperament, and she spent hours reading to her mother, closer to the Tsarina than any of the others. When World War I broke out she chaired charitable committees and trained as a nurse, tending wounded soldiers at Tsarskoye Selo from 1914 until the family's arrest in 1917 following the revolution.
